After School Drama Book Club

A book club with a difference. The weekly after-school club use strategies to develop the pupils inference skills, while allowing them to immerse themselves in the text through song and drama. Once they have completed the book, pupils’ have the opportunity to create a performance demonstrating their understanding of the text and the main characters. To develop their confidence and public speaking skills they perform their work to their parents and/or the school,

After School Drama Book Club performing the song War Horse.

This is what Sana in year 6 said…

I always like reading but now I understand the contents not just the words.

And Issa in year 5…

Now I know how to read with expression and get the audience to feel what I’m feeling as the character.

A year 5 parent who came to see the end of term performance…

Lewis enjoyed doing the performance and thoroughly enjoyed the group.

Literacy Led Singing Workshops

Literacy Led Singing workshops that convert books covered in the National Curriculum into dramatic pieces, scripts or songs.  Our focus is to develop inference skills based on the content of the recommended book or author. Sing a Book puts them together in an interesting and engaging way, which all levels of readers can access.

Sing a Book can write dramatic pieces, scripts or songs in advance, on the day of the workshop or use an exciting song from our repertoire. Songs based on the following authors:

Anthony Browne; Benjamin Zephaniah; Beverly Naidoo; Julia Donaldson; Michael Rosen; Michael Morpurgo and CS Lewis.

By the end of the workshop pupils will have a high quality production to perform that will just need a bit of rehearsing.

Feedback from the children at St Anthony’s RC Primary School:

I really enjoyed the workshop and hope to do it again.

The songs were really good.

The activities were really joyful!

I think the song for War Horse was really good.

Feedback from the teachers St Anthony’s RC Primary School:

The children loved it and it was lovely to do a literacy based music workshop.

Knowledge about the author was evident in the songs.

I’ve never seen a workshop like it before.   All the children were engaged.

Engaging exercise!
